Learn More Abou ALU-Facilitated Insurance

A big part of feeling settled in a new country or new environment is knowing how to take care of your health. ALU-facilitated health insurance is designed so that students are empowered to take care of their health by engaging directly with medical practitioners and the insurance provider. The Student Life team is also available to support students.

ALU-facilitated health insurance is a voluntary service for students that is overseen and facilitated by the Wellness Center at ALU.

Personal Injuries

Cover for personal injuries both within and outside of learning environments, including internship placements in Rwanda. Personal injuries amount below can be used in conjunction with Eden Care's limit or other private insurance owned by the beneficiary on similar benefits as below:

  • Medical Fees: Up to a limit of RWF 4,500,000 (including surgery expenses).

  • Total Permanent Disability: Up to a limit of RWF 5,000,000.

  • Death Benefits: Up to a limit of RWF 5,000,000.

Pre-existing conditions

Insurers should make provision in their product to cover some medical services needed due to pre-existing conditions within the overall limits.

Access to private facilities

Along with public clinics and hospitals, we expect insurance firms to provide access to private medical facilities as well.

Here is an updated list of hospitals, health centers, clinics, and pharmacies.

Treatment in and outside Rwanda

Students should be able to use their insurance cards in Rwanda countrywide with cashless payment. When outside the country, the insurer should give guidelines on how they can still access their benefits. We have agreed on treatment outside Rwanda being covered on a reimbursement basis, where the student pays out of pocket for medical expenses outside Rwanda and requests a refund upon return. Refunds are given on an agreed upon tariff prior to contract signing.

Refunds

Students are entitled to a refund where they pay out of pocket for medical services covered by the insurer. These should be paid within 14 days of request and the insurer must assure that they are willing and able to deliver on this.

Pricing

For ALU-facilitated health insurance, each student can select to enrol in ALU - facilitated health insurance for a period of 4 months (minimum) at the beginning of every term.
